A prisoner killed his cellmate upon discovering that he was sharing a cell with the individual who sexually assaulted his younger sister. Shane Goldsby, then 25 years old, was captured on camera assaulting Robert Munger on June 2, 2020, at the Airways Heights Corrections Center in Washington, US. Munger, aged 70, was serving a lengthy sentence for crimes involving child rape, molestation, and possession of child pornography. Goldsby expressed shock at the situation, stating that being housed with his sister’s abuser in the same facility felt like an improbable and unfortunate coincidence.
At the time of the incident, Goldsby was incarcerated for stealing a police car. Investigations revealed that there was no known familial connection between Goldsby and Munger due to differing surnames among their relatives. Goldsby disclosed that the tension escalated as Munger divulged details of his crimes, including photos and videos, despite Goldsby’s repeated requests to be moved to a different cell, which were disregarded. He expressed his frustration at the lack of response from prison staff even after activating an emergency cell button before the fatal altercation.
In August 2021, Goldsby was sentenced to an additional 298 months, nearly 25 years, for Munger’s murder. He offered a heartfelt apology to Munger’s family through his attorney, expressing remorse for his actions and acknowledging the pain he caused. During the court proceedings, Goldsby’s troubled background, marked by abuse and instability, was highlighted, shedding light on the challenges he faced growing up.
The Washington Department of Corrections described the incident as “unfortunate and complex,” acknowledging that the cellmate assignment policy should have prevented Goldsby and Munger from being housed together. However, the lack of information about their connection led to the oversight.
