Neelam Tanaji Shinde, a 35-year-old student hailing from Vadgaon (Umbraj) in Maharashtra’s Satara district, has passed away in the United States after being in a coma for nearly 14 months post a tragic accident. The incident occurred on February 14, 2025, in Sacramento, California, where she sustained severe injuries in a hit-and-run. Despite undergoing surgery and receiving extensive medical care, she never regained consciousness.
Neelam Shinde has passed away, but her legacy lives on as she generously donated vital organs, providing a new lease of life to several individuals.
Her demise has plunged her family and community into deep mourning, concluding a prolonged and emotional journey filled with hope and uncertainty.
Following the accident last year, Neelam suffered critical head trauma, along with injuries to her limbs and chest, leading to immediate surgical intervention. Despite efforts, her condition remained grave, requiring an extended stay in the Intensive Care Unit without significant neurological improvement. Complications, including an infection related to a feeding tube, further complicated her health.
On March 28, doctors decided to withdraw life support, resulting in a rapid deterioration of her condition, ultimately leading to her passing.
The tragic incident posed emotional and logistical challenges for her family, notably her father, Anand Shinde, who faced obstacles in securing an emergency visa to visit the US. Despite persistent appeals and efforts, delays persisted until political leaders and authorities intervened, allowing Neelam’s father and brother to travel to the US after a considerable delay.
Despite personal hardships, Neelam’s family honored her final wish of organ donation, a process that took around eight days and was successfully completed. While mourning her loss, the family found solace in knowing that her organs would positively impact multiple lives.

Her final rites, adhering to Hindu rituals, will be conducted in the US on April 8 at 1:00 am (IST). Neelam, who had been pursuing studies in computer science in the US for four years, leaves behind a legacy of determination and ambition that transcends borders.
