A violent clash erupted in Sagbari village, Odisha’s Rayagada district, resulting in over 30 injured police officers and several villagers. The conflict stemmed from a dispute regarding road construction related to a proposed mining project in the Sijimali region. Authorities imposed restrictions on gatherings following the incident to prevent further escalation.
The road development, undertaken by a private company, aimed to connect Sagbari with neighboring areas to facilitate access to the mining site. Despite this, local tribal communities opposed the project due to concerns about its potential impact on their land, environment, and livelihoods.
Tensions escalated when police attempted to engage with protesters at the site to maintain law and order. The situation worsened as agitated villagers started throwing stones at security forces. The confrontation led to injuries on both sides, including senior police officers.
Several injured personnel, including high-ranking officers, were hospitalized, with some in critical condition. Additional police forces were deployed by the district administration to restore calm and prevent further disturbances. Prohibitory orders were imposed in the affected village under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
Despite ongoing tensions, authorities are working to de-escalate the situation and avoid further clashes. The road construction is part of a government-sanctioned mining project, but opposition from local residents persists due to fears of displacement and environmental harm. Efforts are underway to maintain control and address community concerns.
