Darts icon Phil Taylor was surprised to learn that Luke Littler plans to do minimal practice before defending his £1 million World Darts Championships title. Littler aims to join a select group of four who have successfully retained the prestigious Sid Waddell Trophy. The highly anticipated darts event kicks off on Thursday night, with Littler facing Lithuanian Darius Labanauskas in the opening round.
Despite being only 18 years old and hailing from Warrington, Littler is opting for intentionally limited practice leading up to the competition, a decision that has astounded the 16-time world champion, Taylor. In an interview with SunSport’s Flight Club, Taylor expressed his surprise at Littler’s unconventional preparation approach, stating that if Littler progresses past the initial round, he believes the young player will excel.
Taylor, known for his rigorous practice regimen throughout his 31-year professional darts career, highlighted the mental aspect as the primary challenge for players at Ally Pally. Stressing the importance of mental preparation, Taylor emphasized the significance of early mental readiness and proper rest to avoid over-practicing, especially with the substantial prize money at stake this year.
The seasoned darts veteran advised players to strike a balance in their practice routine, cautioning against exhaustion and emphasizing the need for optimal physical and mental condition for the demanding three-week championship. Taylor’s insights shed light on the critical role of mental fortitude and strategic preparation in achieving success in one of the most prestigious darts tournaments globally.
