“Iran’s Mining of Strait of Hormuz Stuns US Navy”

Must read

Iran’s strategic utilization of the Strait of Hormuz despite lacking a significant naval force has surprised many, including Donald Trump, who underestimated the country’s capabilities. Iran has claimed to have placed mines in the strait but assures safe passage for vessels following specified routes.

With the Strait of Hormuz narrowing to just 34 km at its thinnest point and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps deploying minelayers, Iran has posed a challenge to the powerful United States Navy in the West Asia region. The initial underestimation of this situation by Washington led to limited sanctions relief on Iranian oil. However, after the failed Islamabad talks, the US has taken a tougher stance, criticizing Iran’s routing mechanism as a form of toll collection for passage through the strait.

The US is now actively working to resolve the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump has threatened to block Iranian ports, and the US Navy has initiated preparations for mine clearance operations in the region. Two guided-missile destroyers, USS Michael Murphy and USS Frank E. Peterson, recently transited the strait as part of efforts to ensure its complete clearance, according to the United States Central Command.

Analysis indicates that Iran has deployed various types of mines in the strait, including moored, drifting, and bottom mines, presenting challenges for the US Navy’s mine countermeasure capabilities. The US employs advanced systems like Airborne Laser Mine Detection and Airborne Mine Neutralization to detect and neutralize moored mines effectively.

Furthermore, the US Navy is equipped with tools to counter drifting mines using surveillance technologies and mine countermeasure vessels. To address bottom and buried mines, the US utilizes subsurface minehunting systems and unmanned underwater vehicles for precise detection and neutralization.

However, concerns have been raised about the adequacy of the US Navy’s mine countermeasure capabilities. With limited dedicated ships for mine clearance and delays in implementing new technologies, the US faces challenges in effectively countering the mine threat in the Strait of Hormuz. The question remains whether the US can successfully clear the mines given its current capabilities and constraints.
