Marc Cucurella has strongly criticized Chelsea’s decision to dismiss Enzo Maresca as their manager earlier this year. The club opted to part ways with Maresca on New Year’s Day, believing that a change was necessary to improve team performance.
Enzo Maresca’s departure followed reports of strained relations with the club’s leadership in recent weeks. The Italian had previously mentioned that 48 hours were his most challenging at Chelsea FC, without divulging further details.
Despite this, Maresca’s tenure saw significant successes. During his first season at Stamford Bridge, he guided Chelsea to victories in the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, clinching major titles during a transitional phase for the club.
In a candid interview with The Athletic, the Spanish defender suggested that it would have been wiser to wait until the summer before making a decision on a managerial change. Cucurella believed that this approach would have allowed the new manager ample time to integrate with the team.
“These are decisions made by the club. Personally, I would not have taken this step. To make such a change, it would have been better to wait until the end of the season,” he remarked.
“By doing so, you would provide everyone, including the players and the new manager, with the opportunity to prepare adequately and have a full pre-season.”
Maresca was succeeded by Liam Rosenoir, who has presided over a challenging period for Chelsea, with setbacks in the race for Champions League qualification and elimination from the competition by PSG.
‘CUCURELLA DISAPPROVES OF CHELSEA’S STRATEGY’
Chelsea has embraced a youth-centric approach to transfers, which Cucurella believes has impacted the club’s competitiveness for major honors. He highlighted the PSG match where Chelsea seemed to lack the necessary experience to succeed.
“Investing in young talent may hinder our pursuit of significant achievements. Against PSG, we were missing players with the know-how to navigate such situations,” Cucurella expressed to The Athletic in an interview released on Tuesday.
“While I comprehend the club’s direction towards recruiting young players and planning for the future, for those of us aiming to win big titles, instances like these can be disheartening.”
“Relying solely on young talents might hinder our goal achievement. In the PSG game, we lacked individuals who had faced such challenges before,” he added.
Chelsea currently occupies the sixth spot in the Premier League standings and has progressed to the FA Cup quarterfinals.
