I advocate for the right of every child born in our nation to have equal opportunities to thrive. They should have access to quality education, a secure home, and regular meals for nourishment.
My commitment to creating a more just and prosperous society led to the decision to eliminate the restriction on the number of children families can claim benefits for in last year’s Budget.
The previous government’s policy of limiting benefits to families with two children deprived many children of basic necessities like food, warmth, and clothing. This measure pushed numerous families into financial hardship and exacerbated the struggles of those already living on the edge. Additionally, it introduced a controversial provision known as the “rape clause” into the welfare system.
I take pride in being part of the Labour government that ended this restriction. Alongside initiatives such as free breakfast clubs and meals for children whose parents are on Universal Credit, we aim to lift over half a million children out of poverty by 2030.
These efforts will provide half a million children with a brighter future, giving them the chance to attend school without the burden of poverty-induced fear and insecurity. Recently, I had the privilege of meeting some of these children and women’s rights advocates at Downing Street, where I witnessed their relief and determination.
Today, Parliament is set to make a decision that will benefit these families, marking a significant milestone in undoing a harmful policy that has persisted for too long. As I cast my vote tonight, I am clear on my choice, leaving it to others, including the Conservatives and Reform, to justify their stance.
However, our work does not end here. It is crucial to continue shaping a society where every child starts life on an equal footing, and where every parent receives the respect, dignity, and support they deserve. This commitment is the driving force behind my political career and government involvement, and I am resolute in delivering on this promise.
