The US government under the Trump administration has canceled the permanent residency status, known as green cards, of several Iranian individuals with ties to high-ranking officials in Iran. Among those affected are Seyed Eissa Hashemi, a psychology instructor in Los Angeles, along with his wife and son, all originally from Iran.
According to the State Department, the individuals have been detained by immigration authorities and are facing deportation. Hashemi is identified as the son of Masoumeh Ebtekar, who played a significant role in the 1979 seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran and later became Iran’s first female vice president.
This recent move follows a similar action taken last week by the State Department, which revoked the green cards of the niece and grand-niece of the late Qasem Soleimani, the former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who was killed in a US airstrike in Baghdad in early 2020.
