Rockstar Games has confirmed a data breach as the gaming community eagerly awaits the release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI). Cybersecurity researchers reported that a group named ShinyHunters allegedly gained unauthorized access to Rockstar’s data through a third-party service. Although the group has not disclosed the data publicly, Rockstar assured that only a minimal amount of non-critical company information was compromised, with no impact on the company or its players.
The breach targeted Anodot, an analytical platform utilized by Rockstar Games for monitoring cloud expenses and identifying irregular spending patterns. The attackers have imposed a ransom deadline of April 14, threatening to expose the data thereafter. The potential data breach includes financial records from GTA Online and Red Dead Online, player spending details, geographical data, marketing schedules, and agreements with Sony, Microsoft, voice actors, and music labels.
Despite the breach, player data such as passwords and payment information seems unaffected, focusing mainly on corporate data. As for GTA VI’s release, the game was initially scheduled for May 2026 but was postponed by six months in November 2026. Rockstar Games confirmed that GTA VI is now set to launch on Thursday, November 19, 2026, starting with consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a PC release anticipated later.
Fans of the Grand Theft Auto series are eagerly anticipating the next installment after the massive success of GTA V, released over 12 years ago, selling over 200 million copies worldwide. GTA VI is projected to offer an even more immersive gameplay experience than its predecessor, tailored for current-generation consoles, promising an exciting advancement for players.
