McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing their displeasure following the announcement of a significant alteration to the company’s loyalty program. The fast-food giant is set to raise the points requirement for obtaining complimentary items through MyMcDonald’s Rewards.
Currently, customers need 5,500 points to redeem offerings like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets. However, starting March 17, the threshold will increase to 6,500 points, with patrons earning 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.
For lower-tier items such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries, the current requirement of 1,500 points will be upped to 2,000 points. Moreover, the points needed for products like a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will rise from 2,500 points to 3,500. To acquire a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, customers will now need 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.
In response to the public outcry on social media, one fan expressed discontent, while another inquired about the commencement date to redeem their points before the change takes effect.
A spokesperson from McDonald’s explained that the adjustments to the loyalty scheme are a response to escalating food and supply expenses. Despite the increased points requirements, the company has introduced several popular items available for redemption for the first time, including Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a new Sausage Sandwich, expanding choices for customers.
The modifications coincided with the launch of McDonald’s new menu, featuring innovative items like the Surf N’ Turf burger, comprising two beef patties, a crispy white fish fillet patty, along with cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup. Additionally, the new Chicken Cheeseburger, Espresso Milkshake, and Chilli Cheese Bites have debuted, offering customers a diverse selection of flavors.
