Prospective homebuyers stand to benefit significantly from the upcoming changes to the Lifetime ISA, as reports indicate the removal of the penalty charge associated with withdrawals.
An updated version of the Lifetime ISA is set to be introduced in April 2028, enhancing options for individuals looking to save for their first home or retirement.
The Lifetime ISA scheme allows individuals to save up to £4,000 annually, with the government providing a 25% bonus on these savings, equating to a potential free £1,000 each tax year.
Under the current model, a penalty is applied to withdrawals from a Lifetime ISA for any reason other than purchasing a first home or for retirement, resulting in the loss of the bonus and a portion of the original savings.
The revised Lifetime ISA is expected to eliminate this withdrawal penalty, with the stipulation that the property being purchased cannot exceed £450,000.
Since the inception of the Lifetime ISA in 2017, the property value limit of £450,000 has remained unchanged, prompting calls from advocates to adjust this limit to keep pace with the rising property market trends.
There is currently no confirmation on whether the property value limit will be revised in the new model. Additionally, reports suggest that the retirement component of the Lifetime ISA will be phased out by 2028.
