Australia is preparing to play a three-game ODI series in Zimbabwe after an eight-year hiatus. The series, set for September 15-20, will serve as warm-up matches for the reigning ODI World Cup champions.
The last time Australia visited Zimbabwe was for a T20I tri-series, where they competed against the hosts and Pakistan. Under the leadership of Aaron Finch, Australia lost to Pakistan in the final by six wickets.
Australia’s previous ODI match in Zimbabwe dates back to 2014, resulting in a disappointing defeat after scoring 209/9, a target that the hosts successfully chased in 48 overs.
Looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia, Australia is gearing up for the upcoming three-match series. Following the Zimbabwe tour, Australia will proceed to South Africa for three ODIs and three Tests.
Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni expressed excitement about Australia’s visit, emphasizing the competitiveness of the upcoming ODI series. The matches are crucial for Zimbabwe’s team development, especially with the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup approaching.
The series presents Australia with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with African conditions ahead of their title defense. Notably, Australia faced an early exit from the T20 World Cup in 2026 after being defeated by Zimbabwe, adding an extra layer of significance to the upcoming matches.
The schedule for Australia’s tour of Zimbabwe includes three ODIs on September 15, 18, and 20 in Harare, followed by their ODI tour of South Africa with matches in Durban, Johannesburg, and Potchefstroom on September 24, 27, and 30, respectively.
