In the ongoing Candidates Chess tournament at the splendid Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Cyprus, four rounds have been successfully completed in both the Open and Women’s categories. As the competition now enters a much-needed break on Thursday, April 2, players are gearing up for the remaining 10 challenging rounds ahead.
For Indian contenders Praggnanandhaa, Divya Deshmukh, and Vaishali Rameshbabu, the rest day offers a crucial opportunity to recuperate and strategize. While there have been some notable moments of success, the overall outlook indicates that the aspiration of an all-Indian World Chess Champion may be gradually fading.
Praggnanandhaa emerges as a strong contender for India in the Candidates 2026. Having previously participated in the 2024 Candidates in Toronto and securing qualification by winning the 2025 FIDE Circuit, he commenced the tournament impressively. Notably, his strategic victory over Anish Giri in Round 1 showcased deep preparation and confidence against elite opponents.
Despite a solid draw against Wei Yi, Praggnanandhaa faced challenges against formidable players like Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Javokhir Sindarov. The encounter with Sindarov proved pivotal as a misstep led to a critical loss, underscoring the unforgiving nature of the tournament. In subsequent rounds, Praggnanandhaa exhibited resilience but missed opportunities to reclaim momentum.
In the Women’s section, Divya and Vaishali started steadily with cautious gameplay initially resulting in no decisive outcomes. However, a critical moment arose when the two faced off, with Vaishali making a crucial error allowing Divya a temporary advantage that was ultimately missed. While Vaishali maintained consistency with draws, Divya encountered challenges in converting advantageous positions, facing setbacks against Goryachkina and Zhu Jiner.
As the tournament progresses, the Indian contingent faces a pressing need for strategic wins to stay competitive. Praggnanandhaa must strike a balance between aggression and control, while Divya needs to capitalize on tactical opportunities swiftly. Vaishali’s composed performance must be sustained as tougher opponents await. With Sindarov leading the pack, the pressure mounts on the chasing players to deliver consistent performances in the upcoming rounds.
With time ticking, every move becomes critical, emphasizing the significance of seizing opportunities and maintaining consistency. As the tournament unfolds, India’s representatives must navigate the challenges ahead with precision and adaptability to stay in contention for the coveted title.
