A young man, aged 20, approached the residence of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, in San Francisco about a week ago. Identified as Daniel Moreno-Gama, the individual reportedly hurled a Molotov cocktail at the property. Police records suggest that Daniel harbored concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to the demise of humanity. There are indications that he may have drawn inspiration from Luigi Mangione, who faced accusations of killing a UnitedHealthcare CEO in 2024.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Daniel Moreno-Gama had previously mentioned the idea of “Luigi’ing some tech CEOs” months before the alleged attack on Altman’s residence. The case draws parallels to Luigi Mangione, who allegedly targeted the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic act of retaliation due to his discontent with the healthcare industry, branding insurance companies as “parasitic.”
Following Mangione’s actions, he garnered support and was hailed as a hero on social media for standing up against the perceived exploitation by healthcare corporations. Many of his supporters even attended his court proceedings.
In a similar vein, Daniel Moreno-Gama seemed to have been influenced by the actions of Luigi but in the context of the AI sector. Police discovered a manifesto in his possession warning about AI’s potential to cause humanity’s extinction, with a specific message directed at Altman. Moreno-Gama is currently facing charges that include attempted murder and arson, with no plea entered yet.
Despite the seemingly negative view towards AI, Daniel had initially expressed admiration for using ChatGPT during his high school days, citing it as “awesome” for facilitating academic dishonesty. However, his perception shifted after delving into the critical views on AI by individuals like Eliezer Yudkowsky, who warned about the catastrophic consequences of developing super-intelligent AI under current circumstances.
Regarding his previous statement about ‘Luigi’ing tech CEOs, Daniel clarified that it was not intended to be taken literally but rather as an expression of frustration. His legal representative argued that the incident should be considered a property crime at most, criticizing the exaggerated charges due to the high-profile nature of the case.
In response to the incident, Sam Altman addressed the situation on his blog, urging people not to involve his family. Interestingly, just two days after the attack on Altman’s residence, gunshots were reported outside the property, leading to the arrest of two suspects by the authorities.
