PBKS Captain Shreyas Iyer Fined Rs 24 Lakh

Must read

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer has been penalized with a Rs 24 lakh fine for the team’s slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This marked the second violation for PBKS this season according to the IPL’s Code of Conduct.

Not only the captain but the entire Playing XI, including Impact Player Priyansh Arya, faced fines of Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lower, making it a costly affair off the pitch despite their strong victory.

Despite the setback, Punjab Kings showcased a dominant performance on-field, comfortably chasing down a target of 210 runs against CSK. Their batting depth and aggressive approach were on full display, overshadowing the slight dampening effect of the slow over-rate penalty.

Will Shreyas Iyer be suspended? Despite Punjab’s second slow over-rate infringement, Iyer will not face a ban even if further violations occur in upcoming matches due to a rule change in the IPL since 2025. The tournament now imposes fines and field restrictions for over-rate violations instead of immediate suspensions.

The IPL has introduced demerit points aligned with the ICC’s system to enforce discipline in the long run. Sanctions imposed by match referees accumulate points on a player’s record, valid for 36 months. Continuous accumulation of these points could lead to suspensions, emphasizing a sustained focus on discipline.

How Punjab Kings outplayed CSK at their home ground: While their bowling unit needs improvement, Punjab’s batting was exemplary in the chase. Priyansh Arya’s aggressive 39 off 11 balls set the tone, keeping the required rate in check. Shreyas Iyer’s composed half-century and the team’s overall attacking intent ensured a smooth chase, leaving CSK’s bowlers struggling and allowing PBKS to reach the target comfortably in just 18.4 overs.
