Australia’s temporary captain, Steve Smith, has spoken out following a tense confrontation with England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer during the final session at the Gabba. The visitors needed to dismiss the Australians for less than 64 runs, which they achieved comfortably as Smith sealed the win for the second consecutive Test.
Smith took to the crease when Australia was at 41-2 and led the charge to victory with a remarkable 23 runs off only nine deliveries. He smacked two massive sixes and two fours, dominating Archer who conceded 15 runs in just five balls.
The heated incident occurred during an over at the Gabba where Archer expressed frustration after being hit for a boundary by Smith. The Australian skipper responded by hitting Archer for a six to deep fine leg and another one over the boundary.
In the subsequent over, Smith struck another six to secure the victory, propelling Australia to a commanding 2-0 lead as they head into the next Test in Adelaide.
When questioned about the exchange with Archer, Smith remarked, “That stays on the field. It was good banter. He’s a good competitor and comes hard at you so it was good fun.”
Archer’s visible frustration highlighted England’s struggles with the pink ball throughout the second Test. The English bowling attack failed to deliver their best performance, contrasting with their strong start in Perth.
After setting a target of 334 runs for the hosts, with Joe Root scoring an unbeaten 134 in the first innings, England found themselves trailing by 43 runs at 134-6 on day three.
Despite a late fight from Ben Stokes and Will Jacks, Australia managed to bowl England out for 241. Travis Head and Jake Weatherald provided a quick start in the chase before Smith’s explosive batting display.
Reflecting on his innings, Smith explained, “It felt right to play a few shots. He was bowling quick, and I thought I’d take on a few. I wanted to finish it quickly with the impending weather.” He praised the team’s performance and resilience, crediting the lower-order batsmen for their crucial contributions.
England faces the pressure of needing a win in Adelaide to keep their Ashes hopes alive, with the third Test set to begin on December 17. Fans can catch all the live action between England and Australia on TNT Sports via discovery+ or Prime Video’s TNT Sports channel.
