A recent revelation by a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant has implicated Pakistan directly in the deadly 2025 Pahalgam attack that resulted in 26 casualties. The confession by Abu Musa Kashmiri, a high-ranking Lashkar-e-Taiba leader, in a widely circulated video suggests that the attack in Pahalgam was orchestrated to enhance Pakistan’s international reputation.
Despite initial denials of involvement by Islamabad following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Abu Musa Kashmiri’s video statement contradicts these claims and casts doubt on Pakistan’s alleged role. The timing of these remarks is significant as Pakistan is currently facilitating ceasefire discussions between the US and Iran to resolve the ongoing conflict in the Gulf.
The militant further asserted that the attack provided Pakistan with an opportunity to position itself as a mediator between the US and Iran. In response to the Pahalgam incident, the Indian armed forces carried out targeted strikes on nine terrorist installations across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir on May 7 last year. Codenamed Operation Sindoor, the operation was described as precise and calculated to prevent escalation.
Among the targeted sites was the Masjid wa Markaz Taiba, a significant mosque complex in Muridke, near Lahore, which is considered the nerve center of Lashkar-e-Taiba’s operations. This complex, known as Pakistan’s “terror nursery,” has been closely monitored by Indian intelligence for its involvement in planning anti-India attacks.
Established in 2000 with alleged funding from Osama bin Laden, the Markaz is linked to Hafiz Saeed’s terror activities and has been associated with training militants involved in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The Indian strike on the Markaz aimed to dismantle Lashkar-e-Taiba’s support networks by targeting both its infrastructure and symbolic center.
The Indian authorities justified the action as a response to The Resistance Front, an affiliate of Lashkar-e-Taiba, claiming responsibility for the Pahalgam attack. By targeting the Markaz, India sought to demonstrate its resolve in combating global terrorism and disrupting terrorist activities.
