Kamra, in a detailed written statement, pointed out the irony in being targeted for a joke, considering the political lineage of Balasaheb Thackeray, a renowned political cartoonist and Shiv Sena leader.
Highlighting Thackeray’s history of critiquing authority figures, including Prime Ministers, without facing similar consequences, Kamra emphasized the importance of protecting the tradition of political satire that Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde purportedly upholds. The controversy arose from Kamra’s parody performance of the Bollywood song “Bholi Si Surat” during his show “Naya Bharat,” which the committee alleged demeaned Deputy CM Shinde and insulted the Maharashtra Legislature.
Despite maintaining a respectful demeanor during the hearing, Kamra refused to issue an unconditional apology, stating on social media that such an apology would be disingenuous and detrimental to artistic freedom. He argued against the misuse of legislative powers to stifle criticism or satire directed at elected officials, underlining the importance of safeguarding citizens’ right to express dissenting or satirical views.
