A recent study suggests that enhancing the diets of individuals with prostate cancer might prevent the need for surgery, according to experts. The trial involved giving patients supplements containing vegetables and beneficial bacteria, which resulted in a slowdown in the progression of a key prostate cancer indicator in their blood. This approach is expected to aid patients in managing the anxiety associated with having a slow-growing tumor that may not pose a threat.
Patients with prostate cancer often undergo regular blood tests to measure prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, which can indicate tumor growth. In a new trial conducted by Bedfordshire University, men with slow-growing tumors were provided with a supplement containing various ingredients like broccoli, turmeric, and green tea. Additionally, half of the participants received a probiotic supplement containing lactobacillus, a type of beneficial bacteria.
The study revealed a significant slowdown in PSA progression in both groups, with the group receiving the probiotic showing even more promising results. This finding opens up possibilities for dietary interventions, especially for patients with slow-growing tumors who are under active observation by the NHS.
Professor Robert Thomas, the lead author of the study and a consultant clinical oncologist, emphasized the importance of dietary interventions in helping men on active surveillance avoid unnecessary treatments. He highlighted that many men face challenges dealing with PSA fluctuations and often opt for invasive procedures, despite the fact that elevated PSA levels can have various causes other than prostate cancer.
The rejection of widespread prostate cancer screening by UK regulators has sparked controversy, with some advocating for broader screening, especially for high-risk groups. The decision not to offer routine PSA testing on the NHS is based on concerns about overdiagnosis and the potential harms associated with unnecessary treatments.
Professor Thomas stressed the need for further research to evaluate the long-term impact of dietary supplements on reducing the need for major interventions such as surgery or radiotherapy. The reluctance to adopt a “watch and wait” approach among patients underscores the complexities of managing prostate cancer and the importance of informed decision-making regarding treatment options.
