Denmark Bolsters Military Presence in Greenland Amid U.S. Control Threats

Must read

Denmark is dispatching additional military personnel to Greenland following escalating threats from President Trump regarding potential U.S. control of the Arctic island.

Preliminary units are being sent to the semi-autonomous region of Denmark to pave the way for larger forces from the Danish Army and other defense branches, as per Danish Broadcasting Corporation reports. An advance team from the Danish Armed Forces is already on-site, focusing on logistical preparations for potential future deployments.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized plans for a more permanent and heightened presence in Greenland by the Danish Armed Forces, including collaboration with other nations. This move is a direct response to the challenges posed in the Arctic region.

Shortly after this announcement, President Trump reiterated his stance that the U.S. requires Greenland for national security purposes, particularly in relation to a proposed missile defense system known as the “Golden Dome.” He emphasized the importance of NATO’s involvement in securing Greenland under U.S. control to prevent potential Russian or Chinese occupation, highlighting the strategic significance of the territory.

Despite Trump’s intentions to acquire Greenland, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that only 17% of Americans support this endeavor, with the majority viewing it unfavorably. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has reaffirmed Greenland’s stance against U.S. ownership, expressing a preference for remaining part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has voiced support for Greenland’s autonomy, emphasizing that decisions regarding Greenland’s future should be made by Denmark and Greenland alone. This stance was reiterated during meetings between U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Danish and Greenlandic officials at the White House.
