“Riyan Parag Silences Critics with IPL Victory”

Must read

Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag shrugged off critiques regarding his captaincy following his team’s commanding victory over Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026. Parag emphasized that external opinions and unnecessary distractions have no impact on him as he aims to lead RR with clarity and confidence.

Parag commenced his inaugural full season as RR captain on a positive note, setting an example as the Royals clinched a convincing eight-wicket triumph in Guwahati on March 30. This win not only kick-started their campaign effectively but also provided Parag with a platform to address concerns surrounding his captaincy.

In a post-match press conference, Parag reiterated his ability to ignore external criticism and concentrate solely on his performance and decision-making process. He highlighted the tendency in cricket for narratives to change based solely on outcomes, irrespective of the rationale behind decisions made.

The appointment of Parag as RR’s permanent captain for IPL 2026 had sparked discussions, especially due to his limited experience as a leader at the elite level. Despite leading the team in eight matches during IPL 2025 in the absence of Sanju Samson, with only two wins during that period, questions were raised by critics. Former India selector Kris Srikkanth was among those casting doubt on the decision, suggesting that Parag was being supported despite inconsistent results.

Critics also cited the presence of more seasoned players like Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal, arguing that RR had overlooked established leadership choices. However, head coach Kumar Sangakkara stood by the decision, emphasizing Parag’s maturity, foresight, and long-term leadership potential.

RR validated their faith in Parag with a clinical display against CSK in Guwahati. After being asked to bat first, CSK struggled on a challenging pitch and were limited to 127 runs, one of their lowest totals in IPL history. The impactful new-ball spell from Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger proved pivotal as they exploited the conditions effectively during the powerplay.

In response, RR effortlessly chased down the target in just 12.1 overs, with young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashing a remarkable 50 off 15 balls to secure a lopsided victory. Despite high expectations for CSK’s revamped roster, the absence of MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis highlighted their lack of depth, while RR made a strong statement at the beginning of their campaign.
