The FIA has officially announced that Mohammed ben Sulayem has been re-elected for a second term as the president of the motorsport governing body. Ben Sulayem emerged as the only candidate for the position after election regulations barred other contenders from entering the race.
Securing 91.5 percent of the vote at the FIA General Assembly in Uzbekistan, ben Sulayem received a standing ovation from attendees following his re-election. The election, however, faces potential scrutiny as challenger Laura Villars is pursuing legal action in France to challenge the validity of the process.
Among the three challengers to ben Sulayem, Swiss racer Villars, American Tim Mayer, and Belgium’s Virginie Philippot failed to meet the requirement of nominating vice-presidents from all FIA global motorsport regions. This led to their disqualification from the ballot, prompting Mayer to criticize the perceived lack of democracy in the election process.
Villars’ legal actions have resulted in a scheduled hearing to review the election’s validity in mid-February. Despite the ongoing legal dispute, the FIA has confirmed ben Sulayem’s re-election through its social media channels, signaling his continuation as president for another four-year term.
Initially elected in 2021, ben Sulayem succeeded Jean Todt as the head of the governing body, overseeing prestigious motorsport events such as the Formula 1 World Championship. Todt had led the organization for 12 years before ben Sulayem’s election.
