After nearly three decades on the show, Malcolm announced his retirement from acting in January 2021 following a heart attack in 2017. This decision marked the end of Norris Cole’s journey on Coronation Street, with the character’s exit involving a move to a retirement home.

Aside from his role as Norris, Malcolm also previously played Carlos, the Spanish boyfriend of Mavis Riley, in the series from 1974 to 1975. His versatility as an actor was recognized with awards for Funniest Character at the Inside Soap Awards in 2001 and 2002.

Some of Norris’s memorable storylines included his relationships with characters like Mary Taylor and his ongoing conflicts, notably with Emily Bishop. Malcolm’s off-screen health scare in 2017 led to his temporary departure from the show, with his final appearance as Norris occurring in June 2020 due to the character’s off-screen passing.

In a candid interview with the Blackpool Gazette, Malcolm detailed his harrowing experience of suffering a heart attack and undergoing life-saving surgery. The procedure, described as “ground-breaking,” involved repairing his heart with tissue from a cow.
