“Boxing Day Hunts in UK Amid Calls to Outlaw Fox Hunting”

Must read

The traditional Boxing Day hunt unfolded this morning, as equestrians traversed trails in the United Kingdom to engage in the contentious activity shortly after a Labour report unveiled the Government’s intention to outlaw fox hunting completely.

Throughout England, Boxing Day hunts occurred this morning, with numerous riders venturing out under the early sunlight accompanied by their hounds to follow a predetermined animal scent. Participants joined in, asserting that the pursuit was focused on promoting both physical and mental well-being without causing harm to animals. Notably, hunting advocate Nigel Farage was observed observing a hunt at Chiddingstone Castle in Kent.

Nevertheless, counter-protesters among the hunting groups contended that the practice serves as a cover for engaging in illegal acts that harm innocent animals, a perspective shared by the Labour Party as indicated in its animal welfare strategy released on Monday.

For the past two decades, fox hunting has been outlawed in all four nations of the UK, with the prohibition implemented during Tony Blair’s administration to curtail what was perceived as a cruel practice involving mounted riders employing packs of hounds to pursue and eliminate the animals. Despite the broad ban, certain permissions have persisted, enabling hunters to conduct “trail hunts” using a scent devoid of foxes.

While hunting and killing foxes remain illegal, animal rights organizations assert that trail hunting permissions are exploited to circumvent the 2005 legislation, with Labour characterizing it in its manifesto as a guise for brutal killings.

Emma Judd, speaking on behalf of the League Against Cruel Sports, noted that hunts rarely lay genuine trails and emphasized their detrimental impact on local wildlife, including domestic animals. She highlighted that if a trail is laid, it is often in close proximity to areas where wildlife and livestock are present, resulting in unintended casualties.

Hunters argue that the activity is intended for socializing and enjoyment, with today likely marking one of their final hunts. Nigel Farage’s robust endorsement of hunting in the UK has been noted, while hunters have been utilizing existing permissions to continue targeting foxes. Criticism and demonstrations against fox hunting were evident at various hunts across the UK. Labour’s proposed measures aim to eliminate all hunting loopholes, as it has been discovered that the hounds involved in the hunts also suffer from the cruel practice.
