India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, held discussions with senior US officials to explore opportunities for enhancing defense and trade relations. The talks also encompassed insights on developments in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia.
During his three-day visit, Misri engaged with Under Secretaries Michael Duffey and Elbridge Colby at the Department of Defense, as well as with Under Secretaries Jeffrey Kessler and William Kimmitt at the Department of Commerce.
Highlighting the ongoing India-US defense exchanges, the Indian Embassy in the US shared that Misri had a comprehensive dialogue with Under Secretary of War for Policy, Elbridge Colby, at the Pentagon. This conversation delved into regional developments in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia.
Colby had previously visited India and met Misri in New Delhi during the India-US Defense Policy Group meeting. Additionally, Misri had a productive discussion with Duffey, the Under Secretary for Acquisition and Sustainment at the Department of Defense, at the Pentagon.
The focus of these interactions was on enhancing defense industrial capabilities, technology cooperation, and supply chain connections between India and the US. This aligns with the objectives outlined in the bilateral Major Defense Partnership framework signed the previous year.
Further, Misri met with Secretaries Jeffrey Kessler and William Kimmitt at the Department of Commerce to expand collaboration in commercial and critical technologies. They also explored the importance of building resilient and trustworthy supply chains.
Misri’s visit to the US aims to assess and strengthen bilateral trade and defense ties while addressing global issues, including the West Asia crisis. This visit is significant as both countries seek to stabilize relations following previous uncertainties and tensions.
The relationship faced challenges, notably with the US imposing tariffs on India and controversial statements made by President Donald Trump regarding the India-Pakistan military clashes last May.
