“Bat-gauge Drama: CSK’s Ayush Mhatre Shines in IPL Clash”

Must read

The clash between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed a rare incident that surprised players, commentators, and fans on Friday. The incident occurred during CSK’s innings when young batsman Ayush Mhatre faced a bat-gauge error after Sanju Samson’s dismissal in the second over.

Initially, Mhatre’s bat did not pass the gauge test, leading to concern. Despite trying two replacement bats, they also failed the test, causing a delay and uncertainty for Mhatre. However, it was later discovered that the gauge had been incorrectly held during the initial attempts. Once tested properly, Mhatre’s original bat cleared the test, resolving the issue and allowing the game to resume.

The incident astonished the commentary team, with Ian Bishop noting the upside-down gauge and Michael Clarke expressing disbelief. The incident quickly gained traction on social media, with fans amused by the unusual turn of events.

Following the confusion, Mhatre showcased an impressive performance with the bat, scoring 73 runs off 43 balls, including six fours and five sixes at a striking rate of 169.77. He set a record as the youngest player to achieve an IPL half-century at the MA Chidambaram Stadium at the age of 18 years and 261 days, joining an exclusive group with Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Prithvi Shaw for the most fifty-plus scores before turning 19.

Mhatre’s 73 is now the third-highest individual score in IPL history for a player under 19. He has established himself as one of CSK’s promising young talents, accumulating 313 runs in nine innings at an average of 34.77 and a strike rate exceeding 183, with two fifties and a highest score of 94.

Despite the umpiring error, Mhatre’s remarkable composure and batting prowess were the standout aspects of the night.
