Iran Declines US Talks, Stalling Mediation Efforts

Must read

Efforts to mediate a ceasefire between the United States and Iran have hit a roadblock, as Tehran has declined to participate in scheduled discussions, as per a report from The Wall Street Journal. The report highlighted a significant setback in diplomatic endeavors to alleviate tensions, stating that current mediation led by regional nations, including Pakistan, has come to a standstill.

Iran has conveyed to mediators that it will not engage with US officials in Islamabad in the upcoming days and deems the demands from Washington as unacceptable, the Journal disclosed. Despite continuous initiatives by regional middlemen to bring both parties to the negotiation table, Iran’s refusal stands firm, even though Pakistan has been actively involved in facilitating dialogue.

While Pakistan had earlier expressed readiness to host talks between the US and Iran, the prospects now seem uncertain following the stalemate in mediation efforts. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had expressed willingness to support meaningful discussions, with the country offering to host the talks. US President Donald Trump had hinted at ongoing negotiations with Iran, mentioning progress but refraining from providing further details.

Contrary to claims suggesting Iran’s participation in talks facilitated by Pakistan, the country clarified that it had not engaged in any such discussions. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, revealed that no direct talks had taken place with the US, only receiving what was described as “excessive and unreasonable demands” through intermediaries.

Baghaei further disclosed that Iran had been presented with a 15-point proposal from the Trump administration, which was deemed as overly ambitious and impractical. These statements have added to the uncertainty surrounding diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan, hinting that any potential dialogue may not be direct, and the outlook for negotiations remains ambiguous.
