A woman recently recounted her experience inside a Chinese ‘fat prison’ where she underwent a 28-day program. TL Huang, an Australian residing in China, spent nearly a month in this strict weight loss facility in Guangzhou. The institution enforced rules such as banning unhealthy foods like instant noodles and maintaining tight security with guards at all entry and exit points.

According to Huang, life in the facility was highly regimented and controlled, with inmates living in cramped dormitories and facing strict daily routines. She mentioned in a social media video that leaving the premises without a valid reason was prohibited, emphasizing the constant surveillance.

Huang’s decision to join the camp, a state-sponsored initiative in China, was influenced by her mother due to her weight gain from consuming takeout meals. She discovered that her every move was regulated, including mandatory weigh-ins and rigorous exercise sessions. Meals were carefully portioned and predominantly consisted of healthy dishes like prawns with vegetables and steamed fish.

After three weeks, Huang fell ill with the flu and a high fever, leading to a hospitalization due to her weakened state. In China, over half of the adult population is either overweight or obese, with predictions indicating a potential rise to two-thirds by 2030. These specialized centers aim to address the nation’s obesity concerns, with individuals paying substantial fees for the weight loss programs.

Huang disclosed that she paid $600 for her stay, which covered accommodation, meals, and fitness activities. Despite the challenging workouts and controlled diet, she expressed satisfaction with her choice, highlighting the positive impact on her routine and habits. By the end of the program, she had shed 6kg.

Reflecting on her experience, Huang shared that while the fat camp was intense, it ultimately helped her establish healthier habits and routines. She emphasized the importance of perspective in weight loss journeys, encouraging others to view such initiatives as valuable steps towards better health and lifestyle changes.
