Donald Trump’s unexpected affinity for Keir Starmer has been a notable development during his current term in office. Starmer has shared that they have a strong rapport, bonding over common ‘family values.’ Many European leaders view the Prime Minister as a sort of influential mediator with Trump, often relying on him to convey messages.
A recent example of this dynamic was evident during an incident involving Nato and Denmark trying to appease Trump regarding Greenland. Starmer acted as a conduit, relaying messages from Nato’s Mark Rutte and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, whom he had spoken to just hours earlier. Notably, Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledges and respects Starmer’s ability to influence Trump’s perspective, albeit temporarily.
However, like any relationship, there are ups and downs. The Prime Minister and Trump had a crucial initial meeting last February that carried significant implications. Despite the initial tension, Starmer managed to break the ice by offering a second state visit from King Charles, which visibly pleased Trump and eased the atmosphere. Subsequently, Trump commended Starmer as a tough negotiator, which is a trait the President values.
Nevertheless, any progress made by the Prime Minister, such as on security assurances for Ukraine, quickly eroded when Trump publicly criticized Zelensky the following day. The fleeting nature of Trump’s goodwill has become a recurring pattern in their interactions.
Starmer was enthusiastic when Trump contacted him to propose a trade deal, even though it included a 10% tariff floor on all items with limited exemptions. Despite the interruptions, Starmer embraced the deal and highlighted it in subsequent announcements. While the initial “Economic Prosperity Deal” was established, hopes for further negotiations to reduce tariffs have since dissipated.
Trump’s visit to the UK in September resulted in the signing of a Tech Prosperity Deal, but it was short-lived as the US halted it, citing slow trade barrier reductions. Starmer’s influence over Trump regarding Russia and Ukraine remains uncertain, as Trump navigates between various advisors and priorities.
The Greenland issue has strained Starmer’s role as a Trump confidant, as Trump’s intentions diverge from the messages Starmer conveys. Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs on those opposing his Greenland ambitions underscore the complexity of their relationship.
As uncertainties loom, with Trump’s unpredictable actions and decisions, the true extent of benefits derived from the relationship between Starmer and Trump remains unclear. The dynamics of their interactions, encompassing formal meetings, jovial exchanges, and geopolitical challenges, raise questions about the depth of their connection and the outcomes achieved.
