An explosion outside the Punjab BJP office in Chandigarh’s Sector 37 on Wednesday evening triggered a swift security response. Sukhjinder Singh Babbar, a Khalistani terrorist, claimed responsibility for the grenade attack.

The blast occurred near the office premises around 5 pm. Initial reports indicate that two individuals arrived on a motorcycle, disembarked, and allegedly hurled a crude bomb or improvised explosive device (IED) before fleeing the scene.

Following the incident, Sukhjinder Singh Babbar admitted to orchestrating the attack in a statement. He vowed retribution for the death of Ranjit Singh, a suspect in the killing of two policemen in Gurdaspur in February 2026.

Although the specific location where the explosive was thrown remains unclear, police obtained footage from a nearby petrol pump. The footage shows a person fleeing, possibly connected to the attack.

Law enforcement authorities swiftly cordoned off the area and retrieved shrapnel fragments for examination. While property damage occurred, including to vehicle windows and scooters, no injuries were reported.

A team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) arrived to gather evidence, with additional security provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Senior police officials, led by SSP Kanwardip Kaur, assessed the situation on-site.

State BJP leader Vineet Joshi described hearing an explosion-like sound at 5 pm, causing panic due to smoke and vehicle damage. He emphasized the seriousness of the security breach, particularly given the office’s proximity.

In light of these developments, authorities are actively investigating the incident to ensure public safety and apprehend those responsible.
