A visitor recorded a terrifying incident where a shark bit her leg and attempted to pull her underwater while she was snorkeling in the ocean. Tayane Dalazen, 36, was snorkeling with friends in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco when she encountered a nurse shark. The shark approached Ms. Dalazen slowly before suddenly biting her right leg, leading to her hospitalization.
Footage captured by the tourist showed the shark’s approach towards Ms. Dalazen before the sudden attack. In the video, Ms. Dalazen is seen swimming gracefully underwater as the shark appears to be circling in the background. The shark then lunges towards her, causing chaos as she struggles against the predator.
Nurse sharks, unlike more aggressive species like Great Whites, primarily feed on smaller prey such as crustaceans and mollusks. Their unique feeding mechanism involves using their strong jaws and creating a vacuum in their mouths to consume food from the seafloor.
Despite sustaining a significant bite mark on her leg, Ms. Dalazen, accompanied by friends and a tour guide, managed to escape further harm when the guide intervened. Following the incident, she was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and posted images showing the shark’s serrated markings on her leg.
Ms. Dalazen humorously mentioned that the shark might be missing a tooth after the ordeal, which occurred in a popular tourist area. The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation initiated an investigation into the incident, as nurse shark attacks are rare but can occur due to irregular feeding patterns in tourist waters.
