IRGC Asserts Full Control Over Strait of Hormuz

Must read

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has declared that it maintains complete and decisive control over the Strait of Hormuz, dismissing what it termed as “absurd demonstrations” and proposals from Donald Trump regarding the reopening of the vital maritime passage. In a forceful statement broadcast on state television, the IRGC emphasized that its naval forces firmly and dominantly oversee the situation in the strait and will not yield to pressure or negotiations from adversaries. Asserting that the strait will not be accessible to the nation’s enemies due to the US President’s actions, the IRGC reiterated its stance.

This statement follows Trump’s assertion that Iran’s leadership had requested a ceasefire, contingent upon the Strait of Hormuz being open and unimpeded. Trump made this claim on Truth Social, stating that the United States would consider the ceasefire request once the strait is accessible. The identity of the party to whom Trump referred remains unclear, as Iran’s presidency has remained consistent.

However, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi refuted Trump’s statement, denying any ceasefire proposal and dismissing reports of a rumored peace plan as mere media speculation. Araghchi emphasized that Iran will continue the conflict until the aggressor faces consequences and Iran receives full compensation. He also underscored Iran’s stance that the future of the Strait of Hormuz will be determined solely by Iran and Oman, highlighting that regional actors hold the authority over the waterway.

Moreover, Iran indicated a willingness to engage in diplomatic discussions, with reports suggesting that Tehran would welcome Russia as a potential mediator. This development occurs amidst escalating tensions in the region, with Iran targeting Kuwait’s airport and an oil tanker near Qatar, while facing airstrikes in Tehran.

Trump’s statements have been inconsistent regarding the conflict’s direction. While he mentioned the possibility of de-escalating the war within weeks if assured that Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons without a formal ceasefire, he has also threatened strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure if the strait remains closed. In contrast, Iran has shown no signs of relinquishing control over the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi, in an interview with Al Jazeera, reaffirmed that Tehran will not succumb to threats or deadlines and will continue to defend itself.
