“Post Office Horizon Scandal Victim Fights for Justice”

Must read

A victim affected by the Post Office Horizon scandal has shared her struggle for justice following the overturning of her husband’s conviction. Glenys Eaton and her husband David were sentenced to six months in prison due to discrepancies found in branch accounts by the Horizon software, which is now discredited. Although David’s conviction was overturned in 2024, Glenys had to push for a judicial review before being informed recently that her conviction could also be quashed.

Speaking to MPs, Glenys expressed the hardship of her time in prison, emphasizing that they are not dishonest individuals. While her husband has been offered an initial compensation of £200,000, Glenys is still awaiting a resolution, expressing empathy for others facing similar challenges without proper support.

The Eatons took over their Post Office branch in 2000, noticing significant shortfalls shortly after the introduction of the Horizon system in 2001. Both were arrested and prosecuted for the same offense.

David emphasized the importance of supporting each other throughout their fight for justice, noting that many others may be unaware of their options and are being neglected. The Business and Trade Committee was alerted to potentially more undisclosed victims of the Horizon scandal, with delays in addressing convictions due to prolonged requests for additional information from government departments.

Legal representatives of the Eatons highlighted the extensive efforts required to overturn Glenys’s conviction, stressing the need for a systematic approach to address similar cases. Despite the government’s allocation of £1.8 billion for compensations related to the scandal, Fujitsu Services, responsible for the Horizon system, has yet to earmark any funds for compensation.

Fujitsu’s director acknowledged the existence of bugs and errors in the system but deferred on committing to a compensation amount until the completion of an official report. Labour MP Liam Byrne criticized Fujitsu for lack of transparency in contributing to the compensation fund, describing their behavior as exploitative of the government.

In response, Fujitsu’s European chief executive defended the company’s position, stating they are not exploiting the government and have the option to decline contract extensions. The ongoing Horizon scandal is considered one of the most significant injustices in British legal history, with unresolved cases continuing to surface.
