“Social Media’s Influence on Modern Politics”

Must read

Modern political movements often rise or fall based on their presence on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. The recent New York Mayoral election served as a clear example of this phenomenon. Despite being an Irish woman residing in London, my Instagram feed was inundated with updates from Zohran Mamdani’s successful mayoral campaign in New York City.

The power of hope and hate as driving forces in politics is amplified through social media. Nigel Farage, known for his ability to encapsulate divisive messages in easily shareable soundbites, effectively leverages this medium to connect with his followers.

A recent report by the charity Demos delved into the perspectives of 16-year-olds across the UK on social media, politics, the state of the nation, and their aspirations. The findings highlighted a disconnect between mainstream politicians and young people, with Nigel Farage being respected for his social media prowess while Keir Starmer was characterized as lacking visibility.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has recently ventured into the realm of TikTok, signaling Labour’s acknowledgment of the importance of engaging with Generation Z through modern communication channels. Despite launching his account on December 8, he has already amassed a considerable following, albeit still trailing behind Nigel Farage’s substantial 1.4 million followers on the platform.

The Demos report underscores the significance of TikTok in shaping political discourse among young individuals, noting that many use the platform as a primary source of news consumption due to its immediacy and relatability. To resonate with the youth electorate, political content must be engaging, lively, and authentic, as it plays a vital role in shaping political identities.

As observed in workshops, memes and viral videos often precede formal introductions to political figures, emphasizing the need for parties like Labour to infuse their social media presence with engaging and relatable content. While Keir Starmer’s TikTok debut faced some initial skepticism, his videos have garnered substantial views, showcasing progress in adapting to modern communication trends.

Labour faces a challenging battle on social media platforms, but their efforts to adapt and engage with younger audiences are commendable, even if they come slightly later in the game.
