Young survivors of the tragic New Year fire incident in Switzerland delivered heartfelt speeches at an official commemoration event today, leading to French president Emmanuel Macron getting visibly emotional.
Marie Albrecht, Aline Morisoli, and Solal Heimendinger, who were all present during the dreadful event, shared their experiences on stage at the ceremony held at the “Le Régent” convention center in Martigny, Switzerland. The gathering of around 1,000 attendees included relatives of the deceased, first responders, and dignitaries.
The memorial service was part of a nationwide day of mourning, occurring nine days after a devastating fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana resulted in the loss of 40 lives, including 20 children, and left 116 injured. Among the victims were teenagers as young as 14 and a pair of siblings.
During her speech, Marie Albrecht expressed deep emotions, recounting the harrowing events of that tragic night at the bar. Aline Morisoli highlighted the challenges faced by the younger generation in today’s world but emphasized the importance of perseverance and fighting for a better future.
Solal Heimendinger, another survivor, expressed gratitude towards the emergency services and medical staff, acknowledging their efforts. The event also featured a minute’s applause for the firefighters and rescue workers, with hundreds watching a live broadcast of the service in Crans-Montana.
Addressing the mourners, President of the Valais State Council Mathias Reynard acknowledged the magnitude of the tragedy, promising a thorough investigation and offering condolences to the families of the victims. Federal President Guy Parmelin reflected on the collective grief of the nation, vowing to honor the memory of the departed.
The owners of the bar, Jacques Moretti and Jessica Moretti, faced legal proceedings following the incident, with allegations of negligence and manslaughter. The ongoing investigation focuses on the circumstances leading to the fire, including potential safety oversights.
It was revealed that seven of the deceased individuals were members of the same football club in Lutry, underscoring the profound impact of the tragedy on the community. The incident involved victims from 19 different nationalities, with several still receiving medical treatment.
The solemn service provided a platform for reflection and solidarity, as Switzerland mourned the lives lost in the catastrophic fire, pledging to support the survivors and uphold the memory of those who perished.
