The popular rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine recently shared his excitement about being incarcerated alongside the former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a Brooklyn prison.
Known by his real name, Daniel Hernandez, the 29-year-old musician voluntarily checked into the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. This decision followed his admission of involvement in a gang-related case where he assaulted a man and was found in possession of drugs last year.
Having violated the terms of his supervised release in 2024, Hernandez received a three-month federal custody sentence, extending a previous 45-day sentence. He took to Instagram to announce his arrival at MDC, hinting at playing basketball with fellow inmates, including Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare’s CEO.
Notably, Hernandez mentioned sharing a cell in the past with Sean “Diddy” Combs and the former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez. This marks his second probation violation leading to prison time within a year.
The MDC, situated in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, caters to individuals with pending cases in the USA’s eastern district court of New York. The facility also accommodates short-term inmates, housing notable figures like Sam Bankman-Fried, Ghislaine Maxwell, and the infamous drug lord “El Chapo.”
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the prison’s conditions have shown improvement since January 2024, with decreased violence and enhanced safety measures for inmates and staff. Despite previous reports deeming the facility as “hell on earth” due to incidents of violence, the fact sheet indicates recent positive changes.
While designed for 1,000 inmates, the MDC has often held between 1,200 and 1,600 individuals, raising concerns about overcrowding and substandard living conditions.
