A large black bear, known as Yellow 2120, had taken up residence beneath a Los Angeles property for over a month, causing damage to the gas lines and structure. The homeowner sought help from the BEAR League after initial attempts by state wildlife officials failed to remove the bear. With the assistance of experienced responders, the bear was successfully coaxed out from under the house using non-harmful methods.
The homeowner, Ken Johnson, expressed relief at the swift resolution, as the bear was lured out and deterred from returning using an “unwelcome” mat that delivered a harmless electric shock. The bear, estimated to weigh over 500 pounds, was captured on video being repelled by the mat. Johnson mentioned the financial strain caused by the bear’s presence, exacerbated by his recent job loss due to a wildfire.
Despite previous unsuccessful attempts to remove the bear, Johnson remained determined, resorting to various makeshift deterrents before seeking professional help. Following the eviction, the bear briefly returned before moving on. Johnson described the experience as unsettling and expressed frustration at the challenges of dealing with the persistent bear.
Efforts to peacefully resolve the situation were ultimately successful, ensuring the safety of both the homeowner and the bear.
