“UK Conservative Under Fire for Abramovich Connection”

Must read

A Conservative Party frontbencher is facing criticism for his involvement as a legal representative for Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign has expressed concern over Shadow Attorney General Lord David Wolfson’s connection to Abramovich. The UK government is seeking more than £2.5 billion from Abramovich, with the intention of using the funds to support Ukraine.

Abramovich is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with the Jersey government regarding over £5.3 billion in assets tied to him. Keir Starmer recently issued a warning to Abramovich, threatening legal action if he fails to transfer the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club.

Lord Wolfson has been retained in the Jersey case, where Abramovich argues that assets cannot be transferred to aid Ukraine until the Jersey proceedings are concluded. The USC has raised concerns about Wolfson’s involvement in the case, questioning the Conservative Party’s stance on potential ties with Russia and Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.

The USC has urged the government to enact emergency measures to prevent sanctioned individuals from exploiting the legal system to delay accountability. Meanwhile, funds from Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea FC, intended for humanitarian causes related to the Ukraine conflict, remain frozen in a UK bank account due to disputes between his legal team and the government.

In a letter to Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, Labour Justice Minister Jake Richards highlighted the conflict of interest arising from Lord Wolfson’s representation of Abramovich. The Tories dismissed Labour’s accusations as political maneuvers, emphasizing that Wolfson is not involved in the Chelsea FC matter and defending the party’s support for Ukraine.

The Conservative Party spokesperson criticized Labour’s attack as a misunderstanding of legal practices, highlighting past instances of conflict of interest within the Labour Party. The Tories reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine and accused Labour of resorting to baseless allegations.
